Arts d’Afrique – Portrait d’une collection – opening 3.11.2016 at gallerie Bernard Dulon, Paris
„When we invited them to photograph a selection of objects from the collection, Michal Sitkiewicz and Pawel Sokolowski were faced with a new challenge : the shift from portraits to still lifes. Their preliminary contemplation of the African sculptures brought out parallels with medieval Slavic mythology, in particular with carved figures of the four-faced divinity Śvetovid. The long exposure time in the camera was used to take multiple images of each object from several angles, developed on the same glass plate. The aesthetic of early photography emerges from each image as well as the artists’ own cultural reminiscences, transferred to the ritual African objects in the collection and made visible through the prism of their deification.”
